ICS will allow attendees to post its training materials as required by OCR in §106.45(b)(10)(i)(D) of the 2020 Title IX Regulations. Once registered for a virtual event, ICS will send additional instructions regarding this process.
Title IX professionals on the ground understand quickly that Title IX is more than just the work of compliance – it is also the work of people who have been through and are going through impactful circumstances. The experiences that constitute sexual harassment under Title IX are often also categorized as traumatic experiences with resulting traumatic reactivity. As Title IX professionals, we need to understand the impact of trauma on the person in an effort to understand its impact on our work. In this comprehensive training, attendees move beyond basic Title IX compliance and into the world of trauma. This training provides an understanding of what trauma is, how it affects a person, how to operate as a trauma-informed Title IX professional, and ways to provide additional care and support to those going through the Title IX process. Specific information is provided on conducting trauma-informed investigations and trauma-informed report intakes. This training is appropriate for any Title IX professional since all persons doing the work of Title IX would benefit from a trauma-informed framework. However, this training is specifically encouraged and highly recommended for Title IX Coordinators and Investigators and is an important part of the certification core to serve in these roles. This training is conducted in one, 2 hour session.
This course will be taught by ICS team members Betsy Smith and Brittany Gates. Betsy has over ten years of experience conducting investigations and training, including five years in a criminal setting and five years in a higher education environment. During her time working for a university, she served as a Deputy Title IX Coordinator for investigations, lead Title IX investigator, and supervisor of campus Title IX investigations and adjudications. While serving as an assistant district attorney she specialized in interpersonal violence cases, including domestic violence, sexual assault, and child abuse matters. Brittany is a former assistant director of a university counseling center and director of student care for a university. She has over ten years of experience in the mental health field, practicing seven of those as a licensed mental health provider with clinical focus in the areas of sexual trauma and eating disorders. Brittany currently still serves as an adjunct instructor in psychology, teaching a curriculum of crisis intervention counseling.
Registrants must be present for at least 80% of the duration of the training to receive a certificate of completion.
