Note from Courtney – Sexual Assault Awareness Month

In April 2024, we commemorate the 23rd anniversary of Sexual Assault Awareness Month (SAAM), centered around the theme of “Building Connected Communities.” This theme resonates deeply with the mission of the ICS, emphasizing the collective effort needed to foster safe and respectful environments.

During this month, Title IX Coordinators across the nation will utilize SAAM to promote awareness of the services offered by their offices and to prevent sexual assault within school communities. We are inspired by the impactful initiatives shared by Title IX Coordinators in our Community Partner ListServ, highlighting their dedication to reaching students, faculty, and staff on this crucial issue.

Prevention lies at the heart of SAAM.  Prevention is a combination of (1) awareness through events and activities, (2) bystander training, and (3) comprehensive, supportive, and prompt responses to reported incidents. Think ABCs! While Title IX Coordinators will take the lead on many of these efforts, robust prevention requires a top down approach with involvement from all facets of your school community.

As part of our commitment to fostering a connected community, I invite you to engage with us in the following ways this month:

  1. Register and attend our Trauma-Informed Training this Thursday, April 11. Gain valuable insights into supporting survivors of sexual assault as well as other traumas with empathy and understanding.
  2. If you work in Higher Education or have a district with a vocational or technical school, register for our free webinar, Top 5 Recommendations for Effective Implementation of the Clery Act, on April 24. This will be an excellent overview with practical information to enhance your understanding of Clery Act compliance and its implications for campus safety.
  3. Consider becoming a Community Partner. Join our vibrant network of professionals dedicated to advancing Title IX and equity work.

There are a myriad of other training opportunities happening this spring! Plus, mark your calendars for our highly anticipated In-Person Title IX Trainings taking place this June 10-12 in Bethesda, MD for K-12, and Chattanooga, TN for Higher Ed. If you have been contemplating becoming a Community Partner, these events offer the perfect opportunity to witness our community in action firsthand. Experience the unparalleled benefits of face-to-face interaction, learning, sharing, and engagement.

As always, the ICS team is here to support you in all of your Title IX and equity efforts. Contact us for more information on the range of services that we offer.
